Oh does this image bring back a lot of memories! For those assignments or the need to prepare for a big test, the carrels of Wilson Library were the place to be. And believe it or not, the atmosphere was conducive to getting a lot done while allowing for every individual in the space to be able to concentrate, research and complete assignments . . . Sigh!!! The missing component in this image? - that of the personal computer. Most research assignments were done in the library or reading through multiple editions of the textbook selected by the professor. And yes, there were rooms available for groups of individuals to collaborate on assigned projects, but generally those had to be reserved in advance and for specific amounts of time, or identified times of the day.Now, with the availability of tablets, desktops, laptops and phones, research can be conducted through the Internet via identified websites or information databases regardless of your lcoation.
Research is defined as "careful, systematic study and investigation in some field of knowledge." (Webster's New World School and Office Dictionary). In today's classrooms it is sometimes hard to explain to students the right way of sharing the resources that they used to locate the information they included in their project. Without following the guidelines, students need to be aware that they can get into trouble for plagarizing if the appropriate citiation is not included to show the origin of the information.
